Chiswick Mall, London

The garden surrounding this listed property, located in Chiswick’s conservation area, felt tired and dated when we first visited. The site had a distinct Arts and Crafts feel and the brief from our clients was to maintain the structure of the garden while providing a full planting refresh.  Using the paths and paving as our starting point, we created a planting scheme for each of the garden zones, bringing seasonality to the beds and borders around the dining terrace, the formal lawn and the rear garden, to provide interest throughout the year.

Structure was provided with evergreen shrubs and white stemmed Birch trees.  We also introduced Maple (Acer palmatum atropurpureum) flowering Crab Apple (Malus ‘evereste’) and a multi-stem white Lilac to the scheme.  Given the proximity to the River Thames and the need for the plants to cope with seasonal moisture, we chose Hydrangeas, Roses, Peonies and Siberian Iris as the key plants in a cottage garden-style palette of pinks, burgundy, blues and white.

The project encompassed a back garden, a front terrace and a roof terrace for the summer months.
